Get Gilded This Summer With Erzulie’s Mineral Cream Eye Shadows

Mineral Cream Eye Shadow – Image from Erzulie Cosmetics

Hello lovelies! We hope you had a beautiful Independence Day last week, we know we did here in San Jose. Today we wanted to share one of our new favorite products for achieving a signature summer look: gilded eyes!

You can achieve this look with Erzulie’s Mineral Cream Eye Shadow in Gilda. It’s a creamy, golden eye shadow full of amazing ingredients like argan oil! Apply with your finger tip to your upper lids, and use  a brush along your lower lashes. You can set the look further by dusting over a golden powder. One of our favorite things about this shadow is it’s multitasking ability: use this cream as a base, shadow, highlighter, or if you are feeling bold a lip color! It’s priced fantastically at $5 a pot, or you can score two shadows for $9 at Rhonda’s Etsy Shop.

Have you rocked a shimmery gilded look yet this summer?

Rock Lead-Free Lipstick This Summer!

Lipstick

Lipstick (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Here at Y&L we always try to share safe and beautiful products with you! Today we wanted to talk about our favorite lipsticks for this summer, which happen to be lead free! You would be shocked at the number of lipsticks that contain significant amounts of lead. Maybelline Color Sensational is the top offender with over 7 ppm of lead! Even Burt’s Bee’s Lip Shimmer made Mother Jone’s Top 20 Worst Offender List! Definitely an article worth taking a look at.

But fret not, you can still rock a colorful pout this summer, sans lead. We’ve picked a few of our favorite brands, some of which are handmade with love and sold on Etsy, and others you can find at your local natural food store or online.

For a great moisturizing lipstick, we love this shade of peachy papaya lipstick from Etherealle on Etsy (only $9.95).

Vegan Mineral Lipstick (Papaya) – $9.95 from Etherealle on Etsy.

What’s to love about this lipstick besides its fantastic color and stellar price? Well it’s:

  • Handmade with natural ingredients
  • Petrolatum & Mineral Oil free
  • Paraben free
  • Cruelty free
  • 100% Vegan – {beeswax, lanolin, & carmine free}

We are also big fans of Jane Iredale products. Her Puremoist LipColour in Carrie is the perfect shade of red! It provides your lips tons of moisture and protection too! You can pick up a tube for $20. While this is a little pricier, keep an eye out for Pharmaca coupons (usually $10 off $50) and you can snag a tube for 20% off online or in stores!

Must Have Products For Naturally Smooth & Soft Legs!

https://i1.wp.com/img2.etsystatic.com/000/0/6412600/il_570xN.275973994.jpgLast week we shared our favorite shaving products for the dudes. This week is all about the ladies. The needs are a little different, and we’ve got some great recommendations for healthy, smooth, and soft skin without harmful products!

First things first, the razor. In the past the ladies of Y&L have tested out every drug-store razor ever made. We loved the Schick Intuition with it’s conditioning head, but alas it is both pricey and full of not friendly chemicals. We suggest opting for a razor that is easily recycled, and even made of recycled materials. We like Preserve’s Triple Blade Razor—it is made from 100% recycled materials, and is completely recyclable when you are done with it. The only drawback to this razor is that it doesn’t have much in the way of a conditioning strip, and it definitely doesn’t have bells or whistles.

Once you’ve selected a razor, it’s time to swap out that fake shave gel in a can for some quality shave cream or soap. I know shaving soap doesn’t sound as luxurious as shaving gel or cream, but that’s because you’ve never used a real SHAVING soap. A https://i1.wp.com/img0.etsystatic.com/005/0/6723703/il_570xN.369043464_fogf.jpggreat shaving soap will have ingredients like Kaolin or Bentonite Clay that helps the razor glide smoothly across your legs, preventing unsightly razor burn. Women’s shave soap generally has more moisturizers added. In particular we are coveting the totally organic Women’s Shave Soap from Akava (available here on Etsy), made with primarily fair trade oils and moisturizers. The scent is fresh, and the price is right at $4 a bar. If you feel like splurging the Pomegranate Shave Soap from Smith Family Soap Works would make a nice gift to yourself or a friend :). This soap smells yummy and is $12/jar of soap on Etsy. This soap uses olive oil to give a great lather and prevent razor burn.

After you lather up and shave, it’s time to moisturize! https://i0.wp.com/img2.etsystatic.com/000/0/5192324/il_570xN.192776470.jpgWith cool and dry winter weather we like to double up our moisturizing efforts. We start first by applying a body oil before toweling off. You can check out our recipe to make your own here, or if you prefer to purchase your moisturizing oil we love the Shea Butter Body Oil from Brown Butter Beauty! It is a little pricey at $15/ 8 fl. oz on Etsy, but you can splurge once in a while. After moisturizing with body oil, lightly towel off excess moisture and apply your favorite lotion. Lately we’ve been using EO’s Coconut & Vanilla & Tangerine Body Lotion (available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores) for a lighter weight moisturizer. If you need serious heavy duty moisture try Everyday Shea Super Hydrating Lotion in Coconut (also available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores!

One of the great things about all these products is that they are free of harmful substances. There is a debate about the use of fragrance and essential oils. If you are pregnant, it is best to avoid using essential oils, but otherwise you are good to go! Oh and did we mention that those handmade soaps and the Preserve razor are great ways to be a conscious consumer—support small businesses and big businesses with green practices!

On days that you don’t shave try using our DIY sugar scrub recipe to keep skin soft and refreshed. But it’s not ideal to scrub right after shaving. This can lead to irritated and broken skin—OUCH! Collecting up these products would make a sweet body care basket for any natural beauty!

What shaving and moisturizing products to you use to keep your legs soft and smooth? Would you consider using a shave bar instead of gel?

Y&L Holiday Gift Guide Part I: The Guy In Your Life

With Thanksgiving behind us, we barely have a moment to breathe until the next round of cool weather holidays. So over the next few weeks we will share some gift-giving ideas for all the people in your life. Let’s start today with the guy in your life. This could be your husband, your boyfriend, your brother, your grandpa, your uncle, or your best friend… you get the picture :). We focus a lot on helping the ladies look good at Y&L, but this gift idea will have the man in your life looking classy—why not give him an old school shaving set. There has been a resurgence lately in using straight blade, barbershop style razors—and even if you don’t opt for the razor you can get him a shaving mug, brush, and bar style soap that he could use with his favorite multi-blade gillette! Depending on whether you are including a razor, there are about 4 things you would consider including in an old school shaving kit for your guy. And for something as quirky as this we love Etsy!

1. The shaving bowl or mug. We like the ceramic option, lidded is a great option but not necessary. We also love when there is a place on the bowl to store the brush—it helps keep the bathroom tidy and prevents mold by allowing his shaving brush to dry out. We love this adorable shaving mug set from Miri Hardy Pottery on Etsy. This set includes soap, and a badger-hair brush as well.

Blue Mustache Shave Set – $78 from Miri Hardy Pottery on Etsy

But this shaving mug is pretty awesome too!

Mustache Shaving Mug Set – $32 from Vintage Parlor Mens on Etsy

2. The shaving brush. Badger hair is supposed to be the ideal shaving brush, but we prefer something a little less cruel. We think it’s best to opt for a brush made of synthetic materials and leave all the furry creatures alone. However several really great shaving sets on Etsy include badger hair shaving brushes and would make great gifts. If you are looking to splurge on a shaving brush the Bocote Wood Shaving Brush from PC Woodcraft & Pens is a great option. Of course there are a lot of more affordable options you can find online too!

Bocote Wood Nylon Shaving Brush – $54 from PC Woodcraft & Pens on Etsy

3. The shaving soap. Bentonite clay is a great ingredient to look for in shaving soap. It helps prevent razor burn and also helps remove impurities from the skin. We love this manly patchouli soap with both activated charcoal and bentonite clay from the shop Bambu on Etsy!

Patchouli Mens Shave Soap With Activated Charcoal – $7.95 by Bambu on Etsy

4. The after-shave. Whether you go for an astringent or a lotion we’ve got a few great suggestions for gifting to the man in your life this christmas. Wild Man After Shave created by Wild Rose Herbs in Oregon is great if your guy is more rugged (or wishes he was).

Wild Man After Shave (4 oz) – $19.95 from Wild Rose Herbs on Etsy

But Sam’s Natural After Shave Cream is great if your guy is more of a lotion person after his morning shave.

Sam’s Natural After Shave Cream (4 oz) – $11.95 by Sam’s Natural on Etsy

5. The razor. There are a lot of options at a variety of price points for straight edge razors. The Merkur Model 180 straight edge safety razor is affordable, fairly easy to use, and durable.

Merkur Model 180 Straight Edge Razor – $32.90 on Amazon

The Chrome Heavyweight razor from the Art of shaving is a balance of beauty, quality, and price as well. It’s a little more expensive than the Merkur but will definitely be impressive for any shave enthusiasts.

The Heavyweight Safety Razor in Chrome – $60 from The Art of Shaving

What are you thinking of giving the special guy in your life? We’d love to hear your ideas, and to know who we should do a gift guide for next!

Product Review Eyeshadow Primer

Magic Vegan Eyeshadow Primer – $7 by The All Natural Face on Etsy

So we have been testing out a lot of products lately… and we’ve got another that we are excited to share with you! The All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer is simply amazing. It is extremely effective, and priced totally right at $7 a bottle. This stuff works just as well as Urban Decay’s Primer Potion ($15) or Two Faced’s Shadow Insurance ($17). It has a sweet little doe tip applicator tip for easy application. I applied this magic primer after my Jane Iredale BB Cream Foundation, but before I put on any eyeliner or shadow. I even applied a little to my lower lash line and under my eye. It kept my eyeliner and shadow in place all day long! All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer also helped brighten up my sleepy eyes without shadow.

Did I mention that this primer is totally vegan and free of harmful chemicals (yay safe cosmetics!)? The bottom line, this stuff is a serious beauty steal, for twice as much product at half the price you’d be a fool not to try (and fall in love with) this Magic Eyeshadow Primer. You can order yours in The All Natural Face’s Etsy store and feel good about supporting another beautiful women in the pursuit of her safe cosmetic dreams!

Oh and for all you San Fran girls out there, if you are worried about getting your makeup just right this Halloween think about stopping by Y&L Style Bar and letting us take care of your Halloween makeup needs!

What beauty goods do you want us to check out for you? Let us know and we will do the tough work!

Product Review: Erzulie Naturegel Mineral Liner!

Today I will fulfill my promise of a full product review for a totally safe, totally natural, and totally affordable gel eyeliner. Before I became a safe and ethical cosmetics convert, I used (and loved) Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in black. It was powerful stuff and with a reasonable price tag of $8. But once I made the switch to safe cosmetics from companies that did not test on animals, my Maybelline Gel Eyeliner was out :-(.

I’ve tried several different eyeliner alternatives, including a gel liner by Terra Firma Cosmetics and a mineral powder liner by Everyday Minerals with lackluster results. Terra Firma’s gel eyeliner burned my eyes and smeared as I tried to apply it, needless to say it was not a winner. And using a pure mineral with a wet liner brush just didn’t deliver the same dramatic effect as a gel. So I was thrilled to try out this new Natural Gel Eyeliner from Erzulie in Intense Black, which promised rich pigments and a smooth application!

A little background on Erzulie Cosmetics: These lovely beauty goods are handmade in small batches by Rhonda Demars, an awesome entrepreneur from Massachusetts that is committed to helping women find safe, quality cosmetics without compromising the environment or the furry creatures that inhabit it. At Y&L Style Bar we love supporting other passionate female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry—so this is a definite reason behind our new-found affection for Erzulie! All of Rhonda products are also non-comedogenic, and FREE of harmful chemicals, Talc, lakes and dyes, Parabens, PEG’s, Polybutenes, Glycols, Acrylates, Synthetic Silicones, phthalates(plastic esters),BHT, Dioxane, Petroleum bi-products and Bismuth Oxychloride. You can find Erzulie Cosmetics and skincare in Rhonda’s Etsy store, and I must also attest to her excellent customer service. She shipped super quickly, responded to my emails fast, and just made the experience of buying cosmetics online really, really pleasant! But onto the review!

I started by first applying my Jane Iredale BB Cream in Light to give my skin a smooth and even look and then applied some of Erzulie’s concealer to my lids and under my eyes to act as a primer. I love layering my eyeliner to get a really bold effect, so I did that here too (but don’t worry I also tested the gel by itself). To layer I first applied Jane Iredale’s Eye Pencil in black to my upper and lower lash lines without stressing too much about it being perfect. Then I took a regular artist’s #1 paint brush and dipped it into the Erzulie’s Naturegel Mineral Liner. Using short strokes (moving from the outer edge of my eye to the inner corner) I applied a thick and neat line on both my upper and lower lash lines. I waited a few minutes and then applied another light coat making sure the line was completely filled in, dark, and smooth (I really like intense eyeliner:-)). After applying the gel I gave my lashes a quick sweep of Jane Iredale Mascara, and touched up under my eyes with some more concealer. As you can see from the pictures, the gel added a nice really bold and rich color!

Erzulie’s Naturegel Eyeliner has a pleasant smell and a glossy texture. I tried out the intense black color, but Rhonda has also created some other great shades: Dark Plum (sounds amazing), Black Cherry, Darkstar Blue, and Dark Brown. A little goes a long way, so I think this pot will last at least 6-8 months. That is a great bargain for only $7.95! I thought that it held up pretty well throughout the whole day. I applied it around 6:30AM, and didn’t need to touch up until about 5:00PM (and that’s just because I’m a little OCD about my eyeliner). It’s definitely important to give the liner some time to set so it doesn’t smear, but this really doesn’t take long, maybe a few minutes. Using a primer really helps keep your eyeliner in place, so I’d recommend using a primer (or a shadow) with this gel eyeliner as well. When I applied Erzulie’s Gel Eyeliner solo it still delivered an intense and long-lasting line, albeit not as intense as layered application. Overall I think this is a great gel eyeliner, at a great price, created by a lady with the same commitment to safe, effective, and sustainable beauty as Y&L Style Bar! So if you are on the lookout for a new eyeliner give Erzulie’s Naturegel Liner a try!

I am already eyeing up Erzulie’s Chubby Pencil Liner, Liquid Liner, and Highlighting pencil! Which of these products would you like to see tested out and reviewed?

Natural Gel Eyeliner!

We are always on the lookout for great products that deliver professional quality without compromising your health, the environment, or your wallet! Today we wanted to give you a heads up on a new gel eyeliner we will be testing soon. It is the All Natural Mineral Gel Eyeliner in Intense Black from Erzulie Cosmetics which is sold exclusively on Etsy. Erzulie Cosmetics are made by Rhonda ( in small batches from safe and organic ingredients. Normally the eyeliner is $9.95 a pot, a steal for gel eyeliner (and comparable to Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner). But right now she is offering it for $7.95, plus a 10% off coupon! Pretty sweet right? From the website and her feedback it seems like this eyeliner could be a new Y&L favorite for creating some dramatic cat eyes. But we can’t give it a stamp of approval without trying it out, but for $7.95 it’s not too big a financial risk :).

If you are willing to wait, we will give you a full product review and pictures of the finished look as soon as we can get our hands on the eyeliner goodies! Have you ever tried Erzulie Cosmetics before?

Wardrobe Essential: The Convertible Infinity Dress!

Y&L is here to help guide you in your quest for personal style that doesn’t compromise your sanity or wardrobe simplicity. We are also about great style for all types of women that doesn’t break the bank. So this week we want to talk about the infinity dress… a piece that can add serious mileage to your wardrobe! One easy way to keep your clothing budget under control without getting bored is to add pieces with versatility. A few weeks ago we featured the Versalette, a fashion creation that has managed to be both dress, top, skirt, jacket, and scarf (and we should hopefully be getting one in grey very soon)! This week we are going to focus on finding the perfect infinity dress for your wardrobe. Some fabulous choices you have are fabric type, color, and length of the infinity dress. You could go the LBD route (little black dress), or opt for a more adventurous neutral (navy, plum, dark grey, taupe), or even go bold (bright red, fuchsia, or neon—and you know our thoughts on neon). The infinity dress below is from Modcloth, and will only set you back $39.99. We have shown it in black, but they also carry it in a bright pink. Some important details include to take note of are it’s asymmetrical cut, and semi-sheer jersey material—personally we think something in a heavier material might get more mileage.

Venturing away from larger retailers into the independent world of Etsy gives you even more options for your infinity dress (and you can feel good about supporting independent women in their craft). We love this mid-length convertible dress from Jennifer Fox’s shop The Convertible One! The mid-length version we have shown is only $62 and comes in a plethora of colors (we are leaning towards eggplant, rhubarb, and mauve). If you prefer floor or maxi-length, it’s only another $10 (making the maxi-length a total $72). The hem is not finished or asymmetrical, but one of the benefits of shopping through Etsy is you can usually request to add or remove certain details from shop owners. Oh and did we mention you can get this fabulous dress in a two-tone fabric??? Awesome.
