Summertime Eye Makeup Tips

Picture of Mona Johannesson from Listal

Hello there ladies! Are you as excited for summer as we are at Y&L? What’s not to love about warm weather, backyard BBQ’s, and relaxing days at the pool? Well nothing except for makeup that melts, smears, and just doesn’t stay put… Don’t worry though, we’ve got you covered with a few tricks that will keep your eye makeup in place even in the hot summer sun! Oh and be sure to tune in next week when we share some tips for keeping your concealer and foundation set!

So some of the major makeup issues during the summer include: melting eye makeup, greasy lids, and concealer that collects in your creases.

To Combat Greasy Lids:

  • Apply a primer. We love this affordable Magic Vegan Eye Shadow Primer by The All Natural Face (just $7/bottle).
  • Apply eye shadow or finishing powder. After you apply a primer, if you have particularly greasy lids or it’s a humid day add some double insurance and apply a shadow or finishing powder, this helps to set the product. You can go with a nude option, or your favorite color. We love the Pure and Natural Tinted Finishing Veil by Willow Tree Minerals on Etsy (just $13.95)

For Under Eye Concealer That Stays Put:

  • Make sure you moisturize first and let it dry. To keep your concealer from looking cakey you always want to apply moisturizer to your eyes, and give it time to dry.
  • Apply a generous amount of creamy under eye concealer. Using a concealer brush and a cream concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation apply the concealer under your eyes. Start at the inner corner of your eye up towards where the inner brow starts. Continue by making a half moon shape following the lower lash line all the way to the outer corner of the eye. Blend the concealer using your finger tips. We love Erzulie Mineral Erase Cream in Light/Medium Light (just $8.50/pot).
  • Set the concealer with a mineral powder concealer. To keep the concealer in place it’s best to set it with a generous amount of concealing mineral powder. Our favorite is Pure and Natural Mineral Concealer in Beauty Sleep from Willow Tree Minerals ($10/pot). This product has just the right amount of light reflecting minerals to hide under eye circles! Press the powder into the concealer starting at the inner corner and brush across the under eye area, sweeping off any extra.

For Eye Liner That Doesn’t Melt:

  • Start with a pencil. After you’ve primed and applied shadow it’s time to apply liner. When you want eyeliner that lasts you need to apply a few layers of product. It’s best to start with a pencil along your upper lash line (and bottom lashes too if you wear it there). We love Jane Iredale’s Eye Pencil in Black ($11 per stick). Just make sure you let the pencil set for a little bit.
  • Apply a liquid liner next. After you’ve applied the pencil, trace your line with a liquid liner and allow it to dry. We love ZuZu Luxe’s Liquid Liner in Raven ($14 a bottle).
  • Set your liner with a shadow in the same shade. Using an eyeliner brush dip it into a shadow or powder eyeliner the same shade as your liquid or pencil. Lightly dab it onto your eyeliner line. DO NOT DRAG IT ALONG THE LINE. Just dab and press, moving along your lashes. This helps to set the product. We love Pure and Natural Mineral Eye Liner in Charcoal Crush by Willow Tree Minerals on Etsy (just $5.95).

What tips and tricks do you have for keeping your eye makeup in place during the summer months?

Product Review Eyeshadow Primer

Magic Vegan Eyeshadow Primer – $7 by The All Natural Face on Etsy

So we have been testing out a lot of products lately… and we’ve got another that we are excited to share with you! The All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer is simply amazing. It is extremely effective, and priced totally right at $7 a bottle. This stuff works just as well as Urban Decay’s Primer Potion ($15) or Two Faced’s Shadow Insurance ($17). It has a sweet little doe tip applicator tip for easy application. I applied this magic primer after my Jane Iredale BB Cream Foundation, but before I put on any eyeliner or shadow. I even applied a little to my lower lash line and under my eye. It kept my eyeliner and shadow in place all day long! All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer also helped brighten up my sleepy eyes without shadow.

Did I mention that this primer is totally vegan and free of harmful chemicals (yay safe cosmetics!)? The bottom line, this stuff is a serious beauty steal, for twice as much product at half the price you’d be a fool not to try (and fall in love with) this Magic Eyeshadow Primer. You can order yours in The All Natural Face’s Etsy store and feel good about supporting another beautiful women in the pursuit of her safe cosmetic dreams!

Oh and for all you San Fran girls out there, if you are worried about getting your makeup just right this Halloween think about stopping by Y&L Style Bar and letting us take care of your Halloween makeup needs!

Product Review: Erzulie Naturegel Mineral Liner!

Today I will fulfill my promise of a full product review for a totally safe, totally natural, and totally affordable gel eyeliner. Before I became a safe and ethical cosmetics convert, I used (and loved) Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in black. It was powerful stuff and with a reasonable price tag of $8. But once I made the switch to safe cosmetics from companies that did not test on animals, my Maybelline Gel Eyeliner was out :-(.

I’ve tried several different eyeliner alternatives, including a gel liner by Terra Firma Cosmetics and a mineral powder liner by Everyday Minerals with lackluster results. Terra Firma’s gel eyeliner burned my eyes and smeared as I tried to apply it, needless to say it was not a winner. And using a pure mineral with a wet liner brush just didn’t deliver the same dramatic effect as a gel. So I was thrilled to try out this new Natural Gel Eyeliner from Erzulie in Intense Black, which promised rich pigments and a smooth application!

A little background on Erzulie Cosmetics: These lovely beauty goods are handmade in small batches by Rhonda Demars, an awesome entrepreneur from Massachusetts that is committed to helping women find safe, quality cosmetics without compromising the environment or the furry creatures that inhabit it. At Y&L Style Bar we love supporting other passionate female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry—so this is a definite reason behind our new-found affection for Erzulie! All of Rhonda products are also non-comedogenic, and FREE of harmful chemicals, Talc, lakes and dyes, Parabens, PEG’s, Polybutenes, Glycols, Acrylates, Synthetic Silicones, phthalates(plastic esters),BHT, Dioxane, Petroleum bi-products and Bismuth Oxychloride. You can find Erzulie Cosmetics and skincare in Rhonda’s Etsy store, and I must also attest to her excellent customer service. She shipped super quickly, responded to my emails fast, and just made the experience of buying cosmetics online really, really pleasant! But onto the review!

I started by first applying my Jane Iredale BB Cream in Light to give my skin a smooth and even look and then applied some of Erzulie’s concealer to my lids and under my eyes to act as a primer. I love layering my eyeliner to get a really bold effect, so I did that here too (but don’t worry I also tested the gel by itself). To layer I first applied Jane Iredale’s Eye Pencil in black to my upper and lower lash lines without stressing too much about it being perfect. Then I took a regular artist’s #1 paint brush and dipped it into the Erzulie’s Naturegel Mineral Liner. Using short strokes (moving from the outer edge of my eye to the inner corner) I applied a thick and neat line on both my upper and lower lash lines. I waited a few minutes and then applied another light coat making sure the line was completely filled in, dark, and smooth (I really like intense eyeliner:-)). After applying the gel I gave my lashes a quick sweep of Jane Iredale Mascara, and touched up under my eyes with some more concealer. As you can see from the pictures, the gel added a nice really bold and rich color!

Erzulie’s Naturegel Eyeliner has a pleasant smell and a glossy texture. I tried out the intense black color, but Rhonda has also created some other great shades: Dark Plum (sounds amazing), Black Cherry, Darkstar Blue, and Dark Brown. A little goes a long way, so I think this pot will last at least 6-8 months. That is a great bargain for only $7.95! I thought that it held up pretty well throughout the whole day. I applied it around 6:30AM, and didn’t need to touch up until about 5:00PM (and that’s just because I’m a little OCD about my eyeliner). It’s definitely important to give the liner some time to set so it doesn’t smear, but this really doesn’t take long, maybe a few minutes. Using a primer really helps keep your eyeliner in place, so I’d recommend using a primer (or a shadow) with this gel eyeliner as well. When I applied Erzulie’s Gel Eyeliner solo it still delivered an intense and long-lasting line, albeit not as intense as layered application. Overall I think this is a great gel eyeliner, at a great price, created by a lady with the same commitment to safe, effective, and sustainable beauty as Y&L Style Bar! So if you are on the lookout for a new eyeliner give Erzulie’s Naturegel Liner a try!

I am already eyeing up Erzulie’s Chubby Pencil Liner, Liquid Liner, and Highlighting pencil! Which of these products would you like to see tested out and reviewed?

Natural Gel Eyeliner!

We are always on the lookout for great products that deliver professional quality without compromising your health, the environment, or your wallet! Today we wanted to give you a heads up on a new gel eyeliner we will be testing soon. It is the All Natural Mineral Gel Eyeliner in Intense Black from Erzulie Cosmetics which is sold exclusively on Etsy. Erzulie Cosmetics are made by Rhonda ( in small batches from safe and organic ingredients. Normally the eyeliner is $9.95 a pot, a steal for gel eyeliner (and comparable to Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner). But right now she is offering it for $7.95, plus a 10% off coupon! Pretty sweet right? From the website and her feedback it seems like this eyeliner could be a new Y&L favorite for creating some dramatic cat eyes. But we can’t give it a stamp of approval without trying it out, but for $7.95 it’s not too big a financial risk :).

If you are willing to wait, we will give you a full product review and pictures of the finished look as soon as we can get our hands on the eyeliner goodies! Have you ever tried Erzulie Cosmetics before?

Do Your Eyeliner Like A Pro!

Eyeliner is a bit of an obsession for me. If I was being banished to a desert island, I’d bring eyeliner. I have tried many application techniques, many kinds, many styles, and many brands. Recently I have tried to switch my beauty goods to natural and safe cosmetics – this has proven tricky for my eyeliner addiction. But finally I have found the perfect combination of products, application techniques, tips, and tricks that I’m excited to share with you.

The Products:

  • Jane Iredale Pencil Eyeliner in Black – This stuff is only $11/pencil, and has lasted me 2 to 2.5 months of daily eyeliner wear (with some touch-up applications for really long days). It is safe for your eyes, doesn’t tug when you apply, and is the darkest and most smudge-proof SAFE eyeliner I have found. I recommend buying Jane Iredale’s sharpener, it’s only $2.50 and it has done a great job of not “eating” my pencil up—which is important for a girl on a budget.
  • ZuZu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner in Raven – At $14.95/bottle, it is a little more expensive then the pencil, but I think it will last a solid 3 to 4 months. This eyeliner is safe and free of harmful ingredients, the pigment is super intense, and the applicator is easy to use. Can you say win, win, win!
  • Everyday Minerals Multi-Tasking Concealer – This fantastic mineral concealer is only $5 and lasts at least 8 months! It works great as a primer for your eyes, and hides dark circles and blemishes!

The Process:

  1. Wash and dry your face. Apply moisturizer and eye cream. Always moisturize!
  2. If you are wearing foundation apply that as well.
  3. Using your (clean) fingertip apply concealer to your upper lids, the corners of your eyes, and under your eyes to hide dark circles.
  4. Take the sharpened Jane Iredale eyeliner pencil and draw a line on your upper lash line from your inner eye out. Get as close to your lash line as possible. It is best to work in one direction, but you can use little strokes to fill in and smooth out the line. The pencil doesn’t have to be perfect because we will be going over it with the liquid liner.
  5. Once you are happy with the width of your upper line, repeat the same process on your bottom eyelash line. To keep your eyes looking big, don’t bring the lower line all the way to your inner crease.
  6. Once you have lined both eyes with the pencil it is time to get a bold and long lasting look with the liquid eyeliner. Liquid eyeliner takes a little getting used to, but after a few tries you will be a pro (trust me I was scared for years to use liquid eyeliner, but now I’m kicking myself for not trying it sooner).
  7. Moving from the inner eye to the outer part of your eye, gently apply the ZuZu liquid liner to your upper eye tracing over your pencil. Maintaining fluid continuous strokes is key, but you will be able to apply another layer or touch up spots after you make the first line. When I get the liquid liner a little too high or out of my desired line, I simply take a clean finger or tissue and wipe it away. Once the liner dries you will need a makeup remover to carefully remove unwanted marks. So it is best to fix it as you go.
  8. Touch up any areas that aren’t dark enough and make sure your line thickness and shape matches.
  9. To finish up your defined eyes swipe some safe mascara onto your lashes. I love to use Ecco Bella FlowerColor Natural Mascara in black ($15 on Amazon, or Vitacost).

I really love the ZuZu Liquid Eyeliner with Jane Iredale’s Eye Pencil. It gives a dark, rich black pigment that stays put all day. They are a safer and more ethical alternative to my old favorites: Rimmel’s Exaggerate Eyeliner, M.A.C.’s Powerpoint Eyeliner, and Maybelline’s Gel Eyeliner.
