Summertime Makeup Part II: Face

Hello there lovelies! We hope you enjoyed our summertime eye makeup tips last week 🙂 And as promised, we wanted to share some tips for keeping your foundation, blush, bronzer, and concealer in place this summer even in the bright sun and warm temperatures! Similar to eye makeup the biggest issues are melting & creasing of your makeup.

Foundation Tips:

  • Always start with a primer. Just like you prime your eyelids, you need to prime your face if you want to ensure that your makeup stays crease free and in place all day. We are big fans of Korres Face Primer, available for $28 from Sephora. This stuff is free of silicone, parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, mineral oil, synthetic dyes & fragrances, and other unpleasant ingredients! It smells amazing and a little bit goes a long way, so even with a heftier price tag, it’s a good investment.
  • Ditch heavy creamy foundations and opt for tinted moisturizers or BB creams instead. Thick liquid foundation is way more likely to melt and crease. So take the opportunity to lighten up your face makeup in the summer. Use your favorite tinted moisturizer or BB Cream. We’ve mentioned it before, but we LOVE Jane Iredale’s Glow Time BB Cream available for $48 online or in stores at Pharmaca. With a higher price tag, you can take comfort knowing this BB Cream will last you all year!
  • Set your BB cream or tinted moisturizer with a lightly tinted or translucent loose powder. To reduce shine and keep your makeup in place take a fluffy brush and lightly dust a translucent or lightly tinted mineral powder on your face. Concealer Tips:

  • Choose a densely pigmented concealer that is creamy (not liquidy) to hide circles and lines. The sun can melt and shine right through lightly pigmented concealers, revealing dark circles, blemishes, and other things you’d rather hide. Again we love the affordable and natural Erzulie Mineral Erase Cream in Light/Medium Light (just $8.50/pot). Just apply the concealer with your ring finger to hide under eye circles and brush to conceal blemishes!

Blush/Bronzer Tips:

  • Ditch the powder and go with a creamy blush during the warmer months. Sweat and powder blush don’t mix well. Apply bronzer just to the high points of your face, where the sun naturally hits you: on your forehead, cheekbones, chin, and nose. 7 Beauty Lessons To Pass On

Parents pass on lessons learned from their life experiences, and try to impart wisdom about a spectrum of issues to their kids. I remember when my mom showed me how to care for my skin (my first cleanser was good old fashioned Noxzema!), and explained to me the importance of a good moisturizer. Her love and wisdom helped me to appreciate not only my physical appearance but also encouraged me to focus on internal beauty (as cheesy as that may sound).

It can be hard to be kid these days, and just as hard as a parent, sister, or mentor to know what to say. So today we have 7 key lessons about beauty to share with your daughter, niece, sister, or any young female you care about.

  1. Begin a skin-care regimen early and stick to it! Skin type will determine the regimen and products that will work best. Choose natural and safe cleansers, toners, and moisturizers when possible. Look at the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database to find safe alternatives. Usually a good skin-care starting point is a gentle cleanser and moisturizer in the morning and before bed.
  2. Put off shaving and waxing as long as possible. This can be hard to do, especially if other girls around you are starting to shave (or even wax), but once you start shaving you can’t stop—and you will grow tired of having to shave everyday! The hair will grow thicker and darker. Please don’t shave arms or facial hair!
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Moisturizing is important for keeping skin healthy and preventing signs of aging (like wrinkles, lines, and spots). Starting early is key to keeping your skin looking young. Again choose a moisturizer that is safe and natural with an SPF.
  4. Wear sunscreen and skip the tanning bed. This relates to lesson # 3, but it is important enough to be a separate lesson. Sun damage and skin cancer are real dangers if you aren’t wearing a facial moisturizer with an SPF and if you aren’t wearing sunscreen when you are outdoors for more than 15 minutes. And tanning beds are just a bad idea, young girls (early 20’s) are developing skin cancer from excessive tanning. Learn to appreciate your natural skin color and your beauty will be longer lasting!
  5. Use makeup sparingly and choose safe cosmetics. When you are young it’s fun to play with makeup and explore different looks, but it is important to learn that too much makeup can look bad and isn’t good for your skin. Constant tugging at your skin, or wearing lots of mascara or false lashes can damage the goods you were born with! So wear makeup, but not too much—maybe a little bit of eyeshadow or mascara, a tinted moisturizer, and lip tint? Again look at the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database to find safe cosmetics.
  6. What you put in your body is as important as what you put on it. Eat a variety of healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and good fats for healthy skin, hair, and physique.Drinking lots of water is essential for keeping your skin hydrated and looking fresh. Avoid too much caffeine, sugary drinks, and fast food. Your young metabolism may not mind soda and fries, but your body (and skin) will feel it later.
  7. Focus on your inner beauty, and the outer beauty really will follow. This is a hard lesson to hear, especially when the pressure is on from peers to look a certain way. But kind, funny, and happy people really are more attractive and more popular. Audrey Hepburn spoke some great words on the matter (and she was both beautiful and kind):

“For attractive lips speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries or the way she combs her hair.

The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.

Makeup Tips For Jet-Setting Ladies

Whether or not you are traveling for business or pleasure you still want to get off the plane looking refreshed. Today we’ve got some tips to share to keep you looking your best even if you are on a red-eye flight!

  1. Moisturize thoroughly before you fly! Traveling dries your skin out, so the night before your flight use a richer moisturizer, and don’t skimp the day off. Pack a travel sized non-comdogenic moisturizer to freshen up with in case your skin gets really dry during travel.
  2. Pack the right stuff. Invest in nice travel bottles and containers so that you can bring your normal skin care regimen with you. Changing products abruptly can cause breakouts, and nobody wants that. We love Humangear’s GoToob bottles. You can pick up a 3 pack from Amazon for $18.24, and we promise they are worth ever penny!
  3. Skip the foundation… if you can. The day of your trip it is best to skip wearing your regular foundation and just use a moisturizer. When you are about to land apply a tinted moisturizer for a fresh look. If you simply cannot go without foundation be sure to use a primer to help it stay in place and protect your skin.
  4. Keep oil at bay. To keep oil under control and prevent skin care havoc, use blotting papers to remove oil from your T-zone during and after a flight.
  5. Don’t touch your face! We repeat, DO NOT touch your face during your travels. Your hands will be picking up all kinds of bacteria that could clog your pores and break you out.
  6. Refresh your face and neck with a rose water spray. Spritzing rosewater spray over your makeup revives tired skin and freshens up your makeup.
  7. Don’t apply makeup over old makeup. If your makeup needs refreshing go with tip #5 and use a refreshing rose water or mineral mist to reset it.
  8. Opt for a lip stain and gloss for a fresh pout. Don’t use a drying long-lasting lip color. Instead apply several coats of lip stain and follow up with a hydrating gloss or lip balm. Just before you get off the plane clean your lips with a paper towel and reapply gloss.
  9. Skip brightly colored nail polish. As much as we love bright neon nails, the truth is traveling can be rough on your hands and chip your polish, leaving your hands looking unfinished. Choose a more neutral color or just go with a clear top coat.
  10. Use a waterproof and smudge-proof mascara. To avoid raccoon eyes it is best to go with a long lasting mascara that won’t smudge onto your eyelids. For the same reason don’t use cream eyeshadows that will end up in your creases.
  11. Use a waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliner. Eyeliner is a must have for me personally, so to keep it in place take the following steps: use a primer or dust your eyelids in a neutral shadow, apply a smudge-proof pencil line, and follow up with a coat of waterproof liquid eyeliner.
  12. Pack a multitasking concealer. To cover up any blemishes or dark circles just before you get off the plane pack a concealer that can do it all. Today we’ve got some tips for picking makeup that lasts through special occasions… like weddings, engagement parties, bachelorette parties, graduation ceremonies, etc. When the emotions run high at these happy occasions, and when the weather sometimes isn’t in your favor (hot sun, humidity, rain, etc.)—you need your makeup to stay put! So here are some basic tips to consider for your eye & lip makeup.

Eyes:

  • Use an eyeshadow primer to keep you makeup in place throughout the day and to prevent creasing.
  • Choose waterproof mascara—this stuff will last through the tears of joy.
  • Choose falsies—false lashes will give your eyes a beautiful look that lasts throughout the day without looking overdone. The most natural looking lashes have an invisible base.

Lips: 

  • Choose a lasting lip color. We are partial to lip stains because they last without smudging off onto anyone you might be kissing!
  • Use a lipliner the same shade as your lipstick/gloss to keep your pink pout in place (it prevents the lipstick from bleeding).

A really great tip for making sure your makeup is perfect and lasting for your big day is to test drive it and work with a stylists before the event. This makes sure that you are both on the same page and have the same vision (and allows you to go out for a night on the town looking extra fabulous). Today we are beginning a mini series on tips for picking makeup that lasts through special occasions… like weddings, engagement parties, bachelorette parties, graduation ceremonies, etc. When the emotions run high at these happy occasions, and when the weather sometimes isn’t in your favor (hot sun, humidity, rain, etc.)—you need your makeup to stay put! So here are some basic tips to consider for a flawless face and rosy cheeks.

Face & Cheeks:

  • Use a primer! This minimizes your pores and helps your makeup stay in place all day.
  • Hide imperfections with the right concealer. Green neutralizes redness, yellow hides dark circles, and lavender hides yellowness.
  • This seems obvious but it can be tricky: choose a foundation that matches your skin tone. Here is the tricky part, be sure to check it in both natural light and artificial light.
  • Test drive your makeup base in photos to see if it matches your skin (better to know before you spend all the money on professional photography).
  • Set your foundation with a translucent powder—this gives your makeup staying power without looking cakey.
  • Get that radiant glow with an illuminator/highlighter. Apply your highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones, near the tear ducts, and just under the brows.
  • To avoid looking too pale, we recommend using a subtle blush swept on the apple of your cheeks—it will bring more life to your face without looking overdone.
