Get Perfect Lashes with Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara – $10 from Target

Hello there lovelies! Are you ready for some backyard barbecuing this weekend? We are! But first we wanted to share a great beauty find with you! Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara is the perfect lash enhancer for any eco-friendly girl! It’s made from all natural ingredients, is never tested on animals, and would only be rated a 1 or 2 on the Environmental Working Group’s Skindeep Cosmetic Database!

We love this mascara because it contains 100% natural fibers to help you achieve a subtle false lash effect and leave all the flaky stuff behind. Now be warned this isn’t like an intense false lash look, but more of a natural false lash look (see the box). It even comes packaged in a cute pink leaf-shaped tube with a recyclable brush! Physician’s Formula promises 24 hour wear, and we would agree that it lasts mostly the whole day, which is perfect for a girl on the go. We didn’t have any issues with smudging or smearing, but you need to give it some extra time to dry. And with most mascaras, if you want a truly dramatic effect it’s best to curl your lashes and apply several coats (probably two). Some users really weren’t huge fans of this mascara, but we would give it a solid 4/5 stars.

You can easily pick up this Fake Out Mascara at most drugstores (CVS, Walgreens, Riteaid), at Target, Walmart, or online for under $10! We really want to try out Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Lash Boosting Mascara next. Have you tried either? What did you think?

Banish Blemishes: DIY Recipe for Treating Breakouts!

DIY Makeup Remover Round 2! Whew… it’s Thursday already? This week went by so quickly… which isn’t a bad thing!  Today we’ve got a recipe to share from the amazing book, Organic Body Care Recipes by Stepahnie Tourles. If you’ve struggled with acne, or even if you just get the occasional breakout this recipe may be just the cure you’ve been searching for. A word of caution though, acne is a tricky beast. We tend to OVER-treat our skin. In general less is more, and the same holds true for skin care. So try to use fewer creams, fewer washes, fewer scrubs, containing fewer ingredients. It’s important to be gentle to your skin. The hardest part of treating acne is finding the patience to wait. It just takes time, months even, for your skin to rid itself of all the built up bacteria and regenerate.

Okay, enough lecture 😉 onto the spot treatment. This recipe is great for “active” breakouts because it helps to fight subsurface acneic bacteria, reducing redness and eliminating toxins in your skin. It’s also fantastic to use on ingrown hairs around your bikini line! You can apply up to 2 times/day and the recipe is good to store for up to 6 months.

Ingredients:

  • 4 drops tea tree oil
  • 2 drops clove essential oil
  • 2 drops German chamomile essential oil
  • 2 drops green myrtle essential oil
  • 2 tsp. hazelnut or apricot kernel base oil (try to choose organic when possible)
  • 1 tsp almond base oil (again, go for organic if you can)
  • 1 dark glass storage bottle with a dropper (you can find these at many health food stores like Whole Foods)

Directions:

  1. Make sure the glass bottle is cleaned and dry.
  2. Add the essential oils drop by drop into the glass bottle.
  3. Add the base oils (use a funnel if that helps)
  4. Put the lid back on the bottle then shake the formula in your hand vigorously for 2 minutes. This thoroughly mixes the ingredients and warms the mixture to body temperature.
  5. This step requires some patience… set the bottle in a dark spot (like a medicine cabinet or drawer) and let it sit for 24 hours to let the oils really blend.
  6. To use: clean your skin, and apply any astringent or toner that is part of your routine. Then drop 1-2 drops of the blemish banner into your palm, dip a cotton swab into the oil and dab onto each breakout. You could also drop 1 drop on the cotton swab itself and then apply.

Again this recipe works well for treating acne, ingrown hairs, and even bug bites! So give it a try and let us know what you think! Have a beautiful weekend 🙂

Sustainable Fashion Part 2

A few weeks ago we did a post about 3 places that we love to shop sustainable fashion online. This week we’ve got 3 more!

Indigenous

Flirt Skirt from Indigenous – $79.

This shop carries fair trade & organic men’s and women’s clothing lines. Indigenous works with local artisans to provide them educational materials, financing, and equipment that couldn’t be afforded otherwise. We are big fans of the “flirt skirt” in a fantastic teal color for $79.  It’s also available in merlot!

Prana

You can shop Prana in person and online. You can find anything from adorable yoga clothing to casual wear to wear-to-work pieces. The company uses organic

Nadia dress from Prana – $45

cotton and recycled polyester in their garments whenever possible. They also work with fair trade artisans to create a few great pieces for their men’s and women’s clothing lines. Prana has also made efforts to streamline their manufacturing practices and packaging to reduce waste. Besides their yoga pants, we are coveting the Nadia dress in black, on sale for $45!

American Apparel

Image from American Apparel

While not everything from American Apparel is made from organic fabrics, they do have one big advantage over many other clothing companies: they are sweatshop free and made in the good old U.S.A.! Reducing the environmental impact of transporting clothing can significantly reduce the negative impacts of the fashion industry on the environment and impoverished workers around the world. And hey, SOME of their t-shirts and underwear are available in organic cotton.

Do you try to shop sustainable clothing?

3 Foods To Add To Your Diet for Beautiful Skin

Image from Demand Studios

We’ve all heard it before: what you eat plays a big role in the way you look AND how you feel. Most people’s New Years resolutions involve eating healthier and exercising. And if this is part of your goal for 2013, you’ll be happy to know your skin and hair will also see great results! We suggest adding some of these foods to your diet to achieve a slimmer waist line and beautiful skin. And better yet, we’ve paired each up with a recipe for some green DIY skin care!

  1. Almonds – these seeds (no they are not nuts) are full of Vitamin E, which are helpful in blocking harsh UV rays from the sun! The key is to not overdo it on the seeds/nuts, about 20 almonds a day is the perfect snack.
  2. Leafy Greens – Kale, spinach, or collard greens are a great way to pack in some extra nutrients without packing on the calories. These green veggies are high in water (great for smoothing wrinkles) and nutrients (for restoring and protecting your body’s cells), and have been shown to reduce cancer risks in some people.
  3. Flax Seeds – High in Omega-3 fatty-acids, flax seeds are well equipped to erase spots and fine lines on your face. They are great for irritated skin! We suggest sprinkling some ground flax seeds (you must grind them to get their nutritional benefit) on your oatmeal, cereal, or in a smoothie.
    • If you have oily skin or old acne scars give this Flax Seed Facial Scrub from Skin Care For Your Soul a try!

What are your favorite health foods for beautiful skin?

Must Have Products For Naturally Smooth & Soft Legs!

https://i1.wp.com/img2.etsystatic.com/000/0/6412600/il_570xN.275973994.jpgLast week we shared our favorite shaving products for the dudes. This week is all about the ladies. The needs are a little different, and we’ve got some great recommendations for healthy, smooth, and soft skin without harmful products!

First things first, the razor. In the past the ladies of Y&L have tested out every drug-store razor ever made. We loved the Schick Intuition with it’s conditioning head, but alas it is both pricey and full of not friendly chemicals. We suggest opting for a razor that is easily recycled, and even made of recycled materials. We like Preserve’s Triple Blade Razor—it is made from 100% recycled materials, and is completely recyclable when you are done with it. The only drawback to this razor is that it doesn’t have much in the way of a conditioning strip, and it definitely doesn’t have bells or whistles.

Once you’ve selected a razor, it’s time to swap out that fake shave gel in a can for some quality shave cream or soap. I know shaving soap doesn’t sound as luxurious as shaving gel or cream, but that’s because you’ve never used a real SHAVING soap. A https://i1.wp.com/img0.etsystatic.com/005/0/6723703/il_570xN.369043464_fogf.jpggreat shaving soap will have ingredients like Kaolin or Bentonite Clay that helps the razor glide smoothly across your legs, preventing unsightly razor burn. Women’s shave soap generally has more moisturizers added. In particular we are coveting the totally organic Women’s Shave Soap from Akava (available here on Etsy), made with primarily fair trade oils and moisturizers. The scent is fresh, and the price is right at $4 a bar. If you feel like splurging the Pomegranate Shave Soap from Smith Family Soap Works would make a nice gift to yourself or a friend :). This soap smells yummy and is $12/jar of soap on Etsy. This soap uses olive oil to give a great lather and prevent razor burn.

After you lather up and shave, it’s time to moisturize! https://i0.wp.com/img2.etsystatic.com/000/0/5192324/il_570xN.192776470.jpgWith cool and dry winter weather we like to double up our moisturizing efforts. We start first by applying a body oil before toweling off. You can check out our recipe to make your own here, or if you prefer to purchase your moisturizing oil we love the Shea Butter Body Oil from Brown Butter Beauty! It is a little pricey at $15/ 8 fl. oz on Etsy, but you can splurge once in a while. After moisturizing with body oil, lightly towel off excess moisture and apply your favorite lotion. Lately we’ve been using EO’s Coconut & Vanilla & Tangerine Body Lotion (available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores) for a lighter weight moisturizer. If you need serious heavy duty moisture try Everyday Shea Super Hydrating Lotion in Coconut (also available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores!

One of the great things about all these products is that they are free of harmful substances. There is a debate about the use of fragrance and essential oils. If you are pregnant, it is best to avoid using essential oils, but otherwise you are good to go! Oh and did we mention that those handmade soaps and the Preserve razor are great ways to be a conscious consumer—support small businesses and big businesses with green practices!

On days that you don’t shave try using our DIY sugar scrub recipe to keep skin soft and refreshed. But it’s not ideal to scrub right after shaving. This can lead to irritated and broken skin—OUCH! Collecting up these products would make a sweet body care basket for any natural beauty!

What shaving and moisturizing products to you use to keep your legs soft and smooth? Would you consider using a shave bar instead of gel?
