Product Review: Organic Wear Natural Origin Loose Powder

Organic wear™ 100% Natural Origin Loose Powder – $10.50 on Amazon

Hello there lovelies! Last week we shared some top picks for primer, and today we wanted to share a review of one of our favorite and budget friendly loose powders—Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Natural Origin Loose Powder! Yes we know it’s been out for a long time, but it’s always good to bring back the oldies (but goodies). Loose powder is clutch for setting your makeup and keeping oil at bay during the summer. But many powders contain nasty ingredients, so choose wisely. We love this powder for it’s natural ingredients, affordability, coverage, and mattifying look. The translucent light is perfect for fair skin tones, giving your skin a matte look while hiding redness and imperfections. It does a decent job of keeping oil at bay, but depending on your skin’s oil levels you probably will need an afternoon touch up. You get a ton of product for just $10.50 on Amazon, or $13.95 in most stores. This one bottle will last you all year—no joke. The brush leaves something to be desired. It’s pretty coarse, but that is a common complaint amongst most reviewers. The little mirror is more useful for checking your eye makeup or covering a pimple versus applying your foundation. If you want a safe (EWG rating of only 2) and effective loose powder pick this stuff up (use your own brush) and you will not be disappointed! Have you tried this loose powder? What did you think?

Get Perfect Lashes with Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara – $10 from Target

Hello there lovelies! Are you ready for some backyard barbecuing this weekend? We are! But first we wanted to share a great beauty find with you! Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara is the perfect lash enhancer for any eco-friendly girl! It’s made from all natural ingredients, is never tested on animals, and would only be rated a 1 or 2 on the Environmental Working Group’s Skindeep Cosmetic Database!

We love this mascara because it contains 100% natural fibers to help you achieve a subtle false lash effect and leave all the flaky stuff behind. Now be warned this isn’t like an intense false lash look, but more of a natural false lash look (see the box). It even comes packaged in a cute pink leaf-shaped tube with a recyclable brush! Physician’s Formula promises 24 hour wear, and we would agree that it lasts mostly the whole day, which is perfect for a girl on the go. We didn’t have any issues with smudging or smearing, but you need to give it some extra time to dry. And with most mascaras, if you want a truly dramatic effect it’s best to curl your lashes and apply several coats (probably two). Some users really weren’t huge fans of this mascara, but we would give it a solid 4/5 stars.

You can easily pick up this Fake Out Mascara at most drugstores (CVS, Walgreens, Riteaid), at Target, Walmart, or online for under $10! We really want to try out Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Lash Boosting Mascara next. Have you tried either? What did you think?

Rock Lead-Free Lipstick This Summer!

Lipstick

Lipstick (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Here at Y&L we always try to share safe and beautiful products with you! Today we wanted to talk about our favorite lipsticks for this summer, which happen to be lead free! You would be shocked at the number of lipsticks that contain significant amounts of lead. Maybelline Color Sensational is the top offender with over 7 ppm of lead! Even Burt’s Bee’s Lip Shimmer made Mother Jone’s Top 20 Worst Offender List! Definitely an article worth taking a look at.

But fret not, you can still rock a colorful pout this summer, sans lead. We’ve picked a few of our favorite brands, some of which are handmade with love and sold on Etsy, and others you can find at your local natural food store or online.

For a great moisturizing lipstick, we love this shade of peachy papaya lipstick from Etherealle on Etsy (only $9.95).

Vegan Mineral Lipstick (Papaya) – $9.95 from Etherealle on Etsy.

What’s to love about this lipstick besides its fantastic color and stellar price? Well it’s:

  • Handmade with natural ingredients
  • Petrolatum & Mineral Oil free
  • Paraben free
  • Cruelty free
  • 100% Vegan – {beeswax, lanolin, & carmine free}

We are also big fans of Jane Iredale products. Her Puremoist LipColour in Carrie is the perfect shade of red! It provides your lips tons of moisture and protection too! You can pick up a tube for $20. While this is a little pricier, keep an eye out for Pharmaca coupons (usually $10 off $50) and you can snag a tube for 20% off online or in stores!

Y&L Style Picks: EcoTools Travel Mineral Brush Kit

EcoTools Mineral Travel Brush Kit ~ $10 on Amazon or at Target.

We are starting a new series, Y&L Style Picks, where we share our favorite tools, pieces, and products that will keep you looking and feeling stylish. To start off our series we have our favorite travel brush kit by EcoTools. This 5-piece set includes a baby kabuki brush, blush brush, concealer brush, and shadow brush that fit nicely in the canvas pouch. The handles are made of sustainable bamboo, and the bristles are 100% cruelty free (made from synthetic but oh so soft fibers). Another bonus, EcoTools is a member of 1% for the Planet, meaning they donate 1% of annual revenue to environmental causes! Currently EcoTools’ 1% goes to EarthShare and Wildlife Alliance.

These brushes are affordable and easy to find, and make fantastic stocking stuffers. The 5-piece kit can be picked up at most Targets or Whole Foods, or ordered online at Amazon for around $10. It’s so nice to have eco-friendly brushes that fit conveniently in my purse or carry-on luggage without spending a fortune. The brushes are perfect for mineral makeup, and the only brush we are missing is one for applying gel eyeliner (oh well, you can’t win them all)! We recently bought these for when we are traveling, and had the chance to test them out—we were not disappointed! Foundation and blush blend nicely, and concealer is easy to apply with this set. And if you are feeling creative you could personalize your canvas case with fabric paint or stamps.

What do you think? Have you tried these brushes out?

Flawless Complexion With One Product: Jane Iredale’s Glow Time

At Y&L Style Bar we are all about beauty and fashion that works for women with a busy lifestyle. So when we find beauty goods that eliminate multiple steps and products—saving you time and money—we get pretty excited. This week we are excited about Jane Iredale’s latest creation for complexion perfection—Glow Time!

It’s a moisturizer, concealer, pore-minimizer, foundation, and sun protector all combined into one little golden tube. Glow Time will cover up blemishes, reduce wrinkles, minimize pores and brighten up your complexion. It is currently available in 7 shades and can be applied with a brush or just your finger. To see a video for applying Glow Time click here. While the tube is only 1.7-ounces, a little bit goes a very long way. So even with a $48 price tag it is a bargain because you won’t need to buy foundation, sunscreen, or even a moisturizer for a long long time (at least a year probably longer).

One of my favorite features of Jane Iredale’s Glow Time is that it is non-comedogenic, meaning it can give thirsty skin plenty of moisture without clogging up pores! I went and got a sample of Glow Time to test it out because my stubborn skin has been breaking out and drying out (eek!). I love it so far because it hides my blemishes and gives my skin some additional moisture without inflaming my acne! I can’t wait to purchase a full tube! So try out Jane Iredale’s Glow Time at a salon (like Y&L) or Pharmaca near you!

Beauty Must-Have: Dr. Bronner’s

Looking for the product that does it all? The one product you can’t live without (besides eyeliner). For me, it is Dr. Bronner’s castile soap. This stuff does it all. In one little bottle you can replace your soap or body wash, your shave gel, your shampoo, and your face wash… at the very least you can combine your body wash and your shave gel (this stuff works great for shaving!). It also works wonders for house cleaning and stain removal.

Dr. Bronner’s castile soap comes in a plethora of scents that are sure to please your nosebuds. But if you can’t find one that you like you could always customize the unscented version with your own essential oils! I’m partial to almond and lavender scents for the ladies, and maybe the eucalyptus or citrus for all you guys out there.

Hate liquid soaps, and like a good old fashion bar soap that also serves all the aforementioned functions? Well you are in luck… the same castile soap by Dr. Bronner is available in bar form 🙂

Other positives of this soap and this company:

  • It’s made of certified fair trade and organic ingredients,
  • It does not contain synthetic foaming agents, thickeners or preservatives,
  • It is packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) cylinder bottles and paper labels, and…
  • You can buy it almost anywhere now (Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, the grocery store, the list goes on!). Oh and if you are looking to save money, you can buy it in bulk!

Dr. Bronner’s is a must have for me while traveling and backpacking as well! Keeps me fresh and eliminates loads of bottles from my toiletry bag—and I can wash my clothes with it! So if you are trekking around Europe this summer (lucky you) or even just the states, I’d recommend giving it a try. Have you every used Dr. Bronner’s castile soap? What did you think?
