The Versalette Challenge Accepted!

Hello lovelies! Last week we gave a shout out to one of our favorite sustainable fashion brands, Seamly.co! We also shared our favorite piece from their line, the revamped Versalette.

Midi Dress by Seamly.co – $40

In case you don’t remember, or didn’t see last week’s post, the Versalette is basically a wardrobe Swiss army knife—a piece that can be worn in 30 different ways. Seamly.co launched the Versalette Challenge this past Wednesday, where fans rock their Versalette in new ways for a week and share photos via Instagram. Fun right? It gets better though… one lucky winner will be chosen based on creativity/personal style and will snag a bag of Seamly.co pieces (including this adorable Midi dress) and some one of a kind jewelry by Native Clutter. And well one of us (Jackie) at Y&L decided to take the challenge, and we thought it would be fun to share her looks so far!

Versalette Challenge Day 1

For day 1 Jackie rocked the original Versalette in charcoal as a skirt with an owl-print tee from Urban Outfitters, chambray button down from Urban Outfitters, and leopard print wedges from Toms. The head band is fair trade.

Versalette Challenge Day 2

By day 2 of the challenge her new Versalette arrived so Jackie decided to try it out, this time as a tunic top belted with a tribal print belt from Anthropologie. Denim from Levis, sandals from Urban Outfitters, and hat from Nordstroms.

What other way’s should Jackie rock the Versalette for the challenge? Strapless dress? Off shoulder top? Bubble skirt? Once the challenge is complete we will share a complete lookbook!

DIY Moisturizing Hand Mask: Great For At-Home Manicures!

Today we’ve got the perfect DIY spa recipe (adapted from Green Beauty Recipes) that delivers the TLC your hands deserve. This would be great if you work a lot with you hands or if winter weather has them dry. If you are doing an at home spa day or manicure why not try this mask after shaping your nails and trimming cuticles? All you need are 4 simple ingredients for softer, happier hands 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp fine sugar or salt
  • 1 tbsp honey or agave
  • 1 raw egg yolk OR 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp full-fat cream (you could use soy if you are only using vegan products)

Directions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir.
  2. Apply a generous layer of the mask to your hands and massage it into your fingertips. Or if you are lucky get someone to do it for you.
  3. Put on some gloves or plastic bags and let the mask sit for 15 minutes.
  4. After 15 minutes you can rinse off the mask with warm water.

*** You can only store this mixture in your fridge for a week if you use olive oil instead of an egg.

If you are looking for some fun ways to change up this mask consider adding your favorite essential oils. Lavender works great for relaxing, but citrus essential oils would be perfect in a salt mask.

How do you keep your hands looking healthy during the winter?

5 Resolutions for A Gorgeous New Year!

Happy New Year to all you stylish ladies (and gentlemen) out there! We hope your New Year’s celebrations were beautiful and safe! We know that today some of you may still be debating what your resolutions will be for 2013. And we thought it might be fun and helpful if will shared some of ours with you!

Our resolutions for a gorgeous New Year are:

  • Start rocking bold lips with confidence. A bright and bold pout can be a little intimidating, so this year we want to find our right shades and embrace our edginess!
  • Simplify our makeup bag.Don’t you dream of a clean and organized makeup bag? Filled only with products you love, products that work? Do you want a quick and gorgeous look in around 5 minutes? We do 🙂 This year, less is more, and we are going to explore how to streamline our (and your) beauty routine and get the most out of the fewest products!
  • Make time to focus on our inner peace. We talk a lot about looking your best, and this year we also want to make sure we are feeling our best. We are thinking some yoga and restful meditation?
  • Laugh more.Laugh lines are one of the few facial lines we feel good about. Laughter relieves tension, releases endorphins, and some research suggests makes you more attractive to those around you. This year we want to make sure we get an extra dose of our daily laugh in!
  • Appreciate the present. We want to remember to love ourselves for who we are now, imperfections and all. While growth is important and essential, it’s important to remember that you are beautiful and strong just the way you are! This year why not try to appreciate yourself and those around you as they are in that moment?

What are your resolutions for 2013?

We’ll share products and take you step-by-step so you can achieve a flawless natural look to take you into the new year.

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Image from beautyatskindeep.com

Maybe some new quality makeup brushes are topping your Christmas list, or maybe you already made the investment in some great tools. Either way brush care and cleaning is essential for keeping both your tools and your skin looking good. Brushes and applicators accumulate dirt, oil, and bacteria with use, and eventually that stuff starts to take a toll on your skin—clogged pores, irritation, and breakouts!

Fear not! We have a simple and safe way for you to keep your brushes clean and free of bacteria. You’ll just need to assemble a few simple ingredients:

  • Baby Shampoo – We like California Baby or Aveeno Organic Baby Shampoo. Castile soap would also work here.
  • Water
  • Olive Oil or Almond Oil
  • Clean sponge or towel

There are 4 basic steps:

  1. Wet the bristles under the faucet with luke-warm water (the bristles should be pointing downwards to prevent water from getting in the metal band or down the handle.
  2. Squirt some shampoo or castile soap onto your clean fingers and apply it to the bristles of the brush creating a nice lather. You could also use the sponge or towel here if you prefer (which helps to show that the brush is actually clean when it stops giving off color). Rinse the bristles and repeat until the water runs clear.
  3. Squeeze out the excess water and lay your brushes on a towel to dry.
  4. Let your brushes dry COMPLETELY before using. Never stand the brushes with the bristles up to dry. This lets water get into the handle and can cause bristles to fall out (oh no!).

You may be wondering what the oil is for. If you have very dirty brushes with caked on makeup, like a liner brush, then you want to use the oil before the soap to loosen dried makeup. How often should you clean your brushes?

  • Foundation , Finish Powder & Blush Brushes – Once per week
  • Eyeshadow & Concealer Brushes – 2 to 3 times per week
  • Eyeliner Brushes – Ideally after each use, especially if you use a sealant or waterproof liner.

We know it’s a pain, but keeping your brushes clean is so important for maintaining healthy skin. At least try to give all your brushes a clean one day a week. Do you practice good brush hygiene? How often do you clean your brushes?

Y&L Holiday Gift Guide Part I: The Guy In Your Life

With Thanksgiving behind us, we barely have a moment to breathe until the next round of cool weather holidays. So over the next few weeks we will share some gift-giving ideas for all the people in your life. Let’s start today with the guy in your life. This could be your husband, your boyfriend, your brother, your grandpa, your uncle, or your best friend… you get the picture :). We focus a lot on helping the ladies look good at Y&L, but this gift idea will have the man in your life looking classy—why not give him an old school shaving set. There has been a resurgence lately in using straight blade, barbershop style razors—and even if you don’t opt for the razor you can get him a shaving mug, brush, and bar style soap that he could use with his favorite multi-blade gillette! Depending on whether you are including a razor, there are about 4 things you would consider including in an old school shaving kit for your guy. And for something as quirky as this we love Etsy!

1. The shaving bowl or mug. We like the ceramic option, lidded is a great option but not necessary. We also love when there is a place on the bowl to store the brush—it helps keep the bathroom tidy and prevents mold by allowing his shaving brush to dry out. We love this adorable shaving mug set from Miri Hardy Pottery on Etsy. This set includes soap, and a badger-hair brush as well.

But this shaving mug is pretty awesome too!

2. The shaving brush. Badger hair is supposed to be the ideal shaving brush, but we prefer something a little less cruel. We think it’s best to opt for a brush made of synthetic materials and leave all the furry creatures alone. However several really great shaving sets on Etsy include badger hair shaving brushes and would make great gifts. If you are looking to splurge on a shaving brush the Bocote Wood Shaving Brush from PC Woodcraft & Pens is a great option. Of course there are a lot of more affordable options you can find online too!

3. The shaving soap. Bentonite clay is a great ingredient to look for in shaving soap. It helps prevent razor burn and also helps remove impurities from the skin. We love this manly patchouli soap with both activated charcoal and bentonite clay from the shop Bambu on Etsy!

Patchouli Mens Shave Soap With Activated Charcoal – $7.95 by Bambu on Etsy

4. The after-shave. Whether you go for an astringent or a lotion we’ve got a few great suggestions for gifting to the man in your life this christmas. Wild Man After Shave created by Wild Rose Herbs in Oregon is great if your guy is more rugged (or wishes he was).

Wild Man After Shave (4 oz) – $19.95 from Wild Rose Herbs on Etsy

But Sam’s Natural After Shave Cream is great if your guy is more of a lotion person after his morning shave.

5. The razor. There are a lot of options at a variety of price points for straight edge razors. The Merkur Model 180 straight edge safety razor is affordable, fairly easy to use, and durable.

Merkur Model 180 Straight Edge Razor – $32.90 on Amazon

The Chrome Heavyweight razor from the Art of shaving is a balance of beauty, quality, and price as well. It’s a little more expensive than the Merkur but will definitely be impressive for any shave enthusiasts.

What are you thinking of giving the special guy in your life? We’d love to hear your ideas, and to know who we should do a gift guide for next!

DIY Lip Scrub: Give Your Pout A Refresh!

Fall and winter bring drier weather and chapped lips. There are plenty of companies selling lip exfoliators and scrubs that work well, but they cost a pretty penny! So instead save your coin for a more important beauty expenditure (like a trip to the salon) and make your own lip scrub. We’ve got a great recipe that you can whip up in minutes for pennies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tsp Coconut Oil (If you don’t have coconut oil you can use olive or almond oil, but coconut has antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it better for storing).
  • 1/4 Tsp Honey
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • Stirrer For Mixing
  • Plastic or Glass Jar For Storage

Directions:

  1. Warm up the coconut oil in a microwave or on the stove so that it liquifies  and will mix easier.
  2. Pour the coconut oil, honey and brown sugar into a jar or container with a capacity of around 1/4 cup.
  3. Mix to combine the ingredients.
  4. Wet your lips and using a clean finger apply some scrub and gently exfoliate the skin on your lips.
  5. Rinse with warm water and apply your favorite balm.
  6. Store in the jar with a tight lid.

This scrub is super tasty and easy to make, and will have your lips looking fresh in no time flat. Oh and the scrub would make a really cute and simple christmas gift for friends! You can get creative with the packaging and even add an essential oil for fragrance.

Do you currently use a lip scrub? Have you ever tried making your own? If you do try this let us know what you think 🙂

Product Review Eyeshadow Primer

Magic Vegan Eyeshadow Primer – $7 by The All Natural Face on Etsy

So we have been testing out a lot of products lately… and we’ve got another that we are excited to share with you! The All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer is simply amazing. It is extremely effective, and priced totally right at $7 a bottle. This stuff works just as well as Urban Decay’s Primer Potion ($15) or Two Faced’s Shadow Insurance ($17). It has a sweet little doe tip applicator tip for easy application. I applied this magic primer after my Jane Iredale BB Cream Foundation, but before I put on any eyeliner or shadow. I even applied a little to my lower lash line and under my eye. It kept my eyeliner and shadow in place all day long! All Natural Face’s Magic Eyeshadow Primer also helped brighten up my sleepy eyes without shadow.

Did I mention that this primer is totally vegan and free of harmful chemicals (yay safe cosmetics!)? The bottom line, this stuff is a serious beauty steal, for twice as much product at half the price you’d be a fool not to try (and fall in love with) this Magic Eyeshadow Primer. You can order yours in The All Natural Face’s Etsy store and feel good about supporting another beautiful women in the pursuit of her safe cosmetic dreams!

Oh and for all you San Fran girls out there, if you are worried about getting your makeup just right this Halloween think about stopping by Y&L Style Bar and letting us take care of your Halloween makeup needs!

What beauty goods do you want us to check out for you? Let us know and we will do the tough work!
